The Food Programme: Fried Chicken - a story of race and identity

This programme examines the complex history of fried chicken and its use in perpetuating racial stereotypes of Black Americans, tracing these associations back to the plantation era.

It follows presenter Jaega Wise and chef Melissa Thompson as they explore their personal relationships to the dish. This is coupled with perspectives from a food historian and a scholar on the significance of shared culinary experiences for marginalised communities.

We join Melissa as she learns a cherished fried chicken recipe and highlights how some are reclaiming the dish despite its problematic past.
